Ok, so you saw Kick-Ass, and it was awesome, right? Then you checked out the comic, and it was equally awesome, yeah? Of course you did. But it got you thinking… who is this Mark Millar guy? He seems to be a pretty decent writer… Has he done anything else?
As usual my friends, we are here to answer your burning questions:
Mark Millar is a Scottish comic book writer. Millar was the highest selling British comic-book writer working in America in the 2000s. His best known works include The Ultimates, Wanted, Old Man Logan, Ultimate X-Men, Civil War, and Kick-Ass.
▪Ultimate X-Men (Marvel, 2000–2003)
Taking the cue from Bendis & Bagley’s hugely successful Ultimate Spider-Man book, Millar takes the X-Men and makes them young, hip and relatable again. Collected as:
▪ Volume 1: The Tomorrow People (#1 – 6)
▪ Volume 2: Return To Weapon X (#7 – 12)
▪ Volume 3: World Tour (#13 – 20)
▪ Volume 4: Hellfire & Brimstone (#21 – 25)
▪ Volume 5: Ultimate War (Ultimate War #1 – 4)
▪ Volume 6: Return Of The King (#26 – 33)
▪The Ultimates & Ultimates 2 (with artist Bryan Hitch, Marvel, 2002–2007)
Probably some of the best superhero comics ever put to paper. With a big-budget movie sensibility, Millar creates a story that is filled to the brim with equal parts action, mystery, and espionage. At the same time, he updates some of Marvel’s biggest names for the 21st century. Collected as:
▪ The Ultimates, Volume 1 – Super Human
▪ The Ultimates, Volume 2 – Homeland Security
▪ The Ultimates 2, Volume 1 – Gods and Monsters
▪ The Ultimates 2, Volume 2 – Grand Theft America
▪Superman: Red Son (DC, 2003)
What would happen if Superman’s rocket from Krypton crashed in the USSR instead of Kansas? This is a fantastic and smart “what if” story that remains a modern classic. Collected as:
▪ Superman: Red Son Deluxe Hardcover
▪ Superman: Red Son paperback
▪Wanted (with artist J.G. Jones, Image/Top Cow, 2003–2004)
We’ve seen the flick with Angelina, but before all that was the graphic novel Wanted. A dark and twisted story that is much, much different from the cinematic version. It will leave you wishing they could have made this version into a movie. Collected as:
▪ Wanted: Assassins Edition paperback
▪ Wanted: Movie Edition paperback
▪Civil War (with artist Steve McNiven, Marvel Comics, 2006–2007)
The basis of the highly popular Ultimate Alliance 2, Civil War drives a rift between the heroes of the Marvel Universe, and the outcome changed things forever. A book that makes you think twice about everything you know about your favourite Marvel heroes. Collected as:
▪ Civil War paperback
▪ Civil War Deluxe Hardcover
▪ Wolverine: Old Man Logan (with artist Steve McNiven, Marvel, 2008–2009)
“No one knows what happened the night the heroes fell…” With that begins Wolverine’s biggest adventure yet. Part Mad Max, part Unforgiven, Millar weaves a post-apocalyptic tale of a man who just want’s to be left alone… but that’s never really worked out for Wolverine, has it? Collected as:
▪ Wolverine: Old Man Logan Deluxe Hardcover
Current on-going titles by Mark Millar:
Ultimate Comics: Avengers #1 & 2 (with artist Carlos Pacheco, Marvel, 2009–present)
Nemesis (with Steve McNiven, 4 issue mini-series, Icon Comics, March 2010-present)
