Hey comic fans!

I trust you all had a pleasant holiday season? Well now that we’ve all broken our New Years’ Resolutions on the first day (Damn you Double Pizza! The aroma of your meat lover’s pizza was too much to overcome!) and had a great time to relax and enjoy ourselves, let’s talk about what’s coming up in this brand new year!

Now “End of the World” aside, it’s going to be an exciting year in the world of comics. Marvel’s biggest event of the new year will be Avengers vs. X-Men! Something is going to pit these two mega-teams against each other and it’s going to take over the Marvel universe in a 12-issue monthly series! No one’s really sure what will cause the event but there are some theories based on Marvel Teasers. It’s going to have something to do with Avengers X-Sanction for sure, as well as involvement by Scarlett Witch and Hope, the mutant messiah. And of course, the Phoenix (anyone who’s read Uncanny X-Men #3 knows what I’m talking about!). What’s got me interested in this book is the incredible team of writers! Brian Michael Bendis, Matt Fraction, Jason Aaron, Jonathan Hickman, and Ed Brubaker. Not to mention the artists, Adam Kubert, Olivier Coipel and the always great John Romita Jr. This is Marvel’s best of the best on this book so it’s sure to be exciting so look for this here in April when it starts!

As always, DC’s new 52 is continuing this year, with promises of much more interconnected story lines as well as something for the more patient of us. While I have made a significant shift from collecting graphic novels to collecting single issues because of the new 52, not everyone has gone for this route. Well good news! The first batch of hardcover graphic novels from the new 52 will be arriving this year! Starting in May, DC New 52 hardcovers will be released covering the initial story lines of the reboot. This is great for those of us who missed the first couple of issues and decided to wait for them to be collected in a sturdier form!

Obviously this new year means a bunch of new comic releases and exciting events. As always, both of the shops will be here to help you get the books you want and venture into the waters of the new year with a smile on your face rather than a scowl of confusion! Happy New Years to all of you from all of us at the 4th Wall and may 2012 treat you well!

Hi guys!

I know it’s been a while since I posted anything, but I’m back now to tell you all about my latest discovery in the world in which we live.

If you’re anything like me, part of a fantastic comic is the art work. Sure, the characters and story and all that count too, but if the art is really shoddy it makes it less enjoyable. This leads me to my discovery, and its called Thought Bubble. It’s not just one story, but rather a collection of various different comics from the Leeds Comic Art Festival. In my opinion, the two best things about this book are that it folds out to newspaper size, so bigger pages – bigger pictures, and secondly, that the art work varies so much within the book that you get a little taste of everything.

In other news, I’m still really really enjoying Swamp Thing, and I feel like I should read Animal Man for the crossover between them. Although I was skeptical after reading issue one, I think they’re doing a fantastic job with this whole bringing him back thing. I still have a lot of 52 to catch up on, I fell behind during finals, but rest assured that I will do so in due time. Oh! And if you’re interested, there’s a book of all the issues ones. Its hard cover, and pretty, and came out this week for you to enjoy!

All my love,

Bee

Hey kids, been awhile huh?

We are soon leaving the third month of the New52 and it has been gearing up. Aside from the excellent titles from the last few weeks (Batman, Justice League, Action Comics and Green Lantern all come to mind) this week has seen some excellent issues. I wanted to list what I thought were the three best issues from this week, and give my thoughts on what makes them so great and why you should be picking these up!

Aquaman: I think what makes this book so phenomenal is Geoff Johns’ writing. The way the characters interact with Aquaman, and how he is portrayed just make this book excellent. Everyone makes jokes about Aquaman and Johns’ spends half his time addressing these jabs. I’ve personally realized how stupid every argument for Aquaman’s “suckiness” has been. He is really cool and this book just dispelled all of the bad things I’d ever heard about him. The enemy he’s facing is interesting and this issue brings up an interesting moral dilemma that I hope continues to be fleshed out over the course of this story arc.

The Flash: Oh man. I freaking love this book. It is just so cool. The Flash was never a character that interested me beyond being the comic foil for the Justice League. But this book has flipped it around completely. I never realized the range of Flash’s power beyond running really really fast, and this book is playing with it in an interesting way. One thing that makes me love this book above all else is the art. Francis Manapul knows how to make good, dynamic and movie style pages. The way he places his panels and arranges the effects (my god that beautiful “splash” sound effect in issue #1) just makes it feel like a television show on paper! His style is almost cartoony, but it’s endearing and mature at the same time. This book made me care about the Flash, much like Aquaman, and I think that is what the 52 is about.

Green Lantern New Guardians: This book is just a straight up guilty pleasure for me. What got me excited about the Green Lantern was the emergence of the other colors in the spectrum, after the Sinestro Corps War. I was intrigued that nobody had ever considered that if Green and Yellow existed, why didn’t the others? Overtime, I’ve fallen in love with the Red Lanterns and the other lanterns just seem so exciting and cool. Putting all these elements together into one book has huge potential for awesome. Not to mention that they’ve taken some of the better lanterns to fill out this book such as Arkillo and Bleez (though I wish they’d give her the intelligence she so recently gained in Red Lanterns #3). And that splash page in issue #2! So cool!

There you have it, a nerd’s humble opinions on some of the best new titles the new 52 has to offer! Tune in next week when I inevitably talk about Uncanny X-men #2 (out next week!) vs. Wolverine and the X-Men #2 (out this week!).

Happy reading!

Hey guys!

This is Marc, one of the new bloods at our wonderful shops here! You’ll come to meet us all, and hopefully love us (as friends, don’t make this weird) as we guide you safely through the waters of the comic book world! We’ll be at both stores addressing your needs and if that isn’t enough, we’ve been given web access! So you’ll get to read all about us here on the site. We’ll be blogging all about our favourite reads, our newest books and merch, and whatever else we feel like. This is the first in what will probably be millions (I’m optimistic ok?) posts to the site.

So the other night, I’m talking to our fearless leader (or Moss as you may know him) about the new Batman game, Arkham City. I’m going on and on and he finally looks at me and says “That’d be a good thing to blog about”. So here we are!

Arkham City is the creme de la creme of comic book/superhero games. It is mind blowing. If you’ve played it’s predecessor, Arkham Asylum, then you don’t need to listen to me because you already know how awesome it is. But for the uninformed, let me give you some info. In the last game, Joker did his usual mayhem inside Arkham Asylum and took Batman along for the ride. Since then, the former warden Quincy Sharpe has now become the mayor of Gotham City. He’s cordoned off a section of the city and made it into a new facility “Arkham City”. Arkham City is run by Hugo Strange and he’s out to get the Batman!

I’m only a third of my way into the game and let me tell you, it is stuffed full of epic Batman-y goodness. I’ve already met like 4 villains, beat down so many thugs and have had my mind blown by plot elements (none of which I will divulge because I understand spoiler frustration). And all of that is just the main story, I haven’t even begun to explain the side missions (of which there are a good amount) and the challenges you unlock by collecting riddler trophies.

I picked up the Collector’s Edition, which I only recommend to the most hardcore of Batman fans. There’s some decent swag in there. The DLC (downloadable content) is pretty sweet, not too mention the Robin DLC and Nightwing DLC that’ll be coming out in November, and the soundtrack is good. But if none of that is interesting to you, and you don’t have 100$ to spend, then by all means go and get the regular edition for the regular price. It doesn’t change how awesome the game is.

The most important element of this game is how much like Batman it makes you feel. Being able to act like my childhood hero, and actually play out one of the most awesome scenarios, it’s too great to express. You truly feel like you’re in the cape and cowl. And there’s honestly nothing better than that.

I’ve only scraped the surface of the giant bundle of amazing that is Arkham City. Trust me, if I went on, the next Batman game will have already come out and this’ll be old news. If you’re interested to know more, come ask me at the store, ask in the comments or pick up the game and see for yourself! You’ll be happy you did, trust me. Hopefully, you’ll be hearing from all of us again soon with a variety of reviews, opinions and utter nonsense!
