Industry Notes

It was actually something of a quiet week within the industry, as the biggest news seemed to center around TV. The premiere of The Walking Dead is fast approaching, but ABC and Marvel have announced that The Incredible Hulk is making a return to the small screen! Also, the folks at Warner Bros are looking to develop a new Wonder Woman series!

I think this is a fantastic trend for the adaptation of comics. So many titles out there suffer when turned into movies because they have to be heavily edited and usually end up leaving something essential to the story on the cutting room floor. But utilizing the multi-part TV series format, there is much more room to breathe, and stories can be told as they were in the books.

The Walking Dead is going to be a great example of this, and if it does well I hope that properties like Preacher, Y: The Last Man and Sandman, who have been languishing in movie-development purgatory for years, can find a home.

Opinions Expressed….

On The Watchtower this week, we talk TV, Green Lantern’s new Power Battery, and give you the rundown of all the biggest and best books on the shelves!

If you’re an amusement park fan, you’ll be happy to hear that California’s Six Flags Magic Mountain will build an all-new Green Lantern-themed roller coaster as well as a redesign and re-branding of its Superman: Escape From Krypton ride.

And not to beat a Green Horse, but some concepts for OA, the home of the Green Lanterns have leaked on to the ol’ intranets. You’ll see them close up in next summer’s blockbuster Green Lantern movie, but have a look at the concepts here.

Shop News

It’s been something of a quiet week here in the store. It may or may not have something to do with the man the call Sohmer being 15 hours in the future, but either way, it’s been a relaxing time.

There was a metric ton of new releases on the single-issue side of things this week, so while I paw through them and try and get caught up reading, here’s a 17-minute making-of documentary from AMC’s The Walking Dead.

Man, I cannot wait for that show. Also, all the volumes of The Walking Dead, hardcover or softcover are here and waiting for you to discover!

Finally, Halloween is by far my favourite holiday, so to celebrate if you come into the store in your full out Halloween costume on October 30th or 31st, you will get 20% off your purchase. Just like that!

Industry Notes

The big news out of New York Comicon last week was that, starting in January, Marvel and DC are lowering their prices on selected books from $3.99 to $2.99. This is a big deal, and one of the first price rollbacks I’ve ever heard of in comics.

DC was nice enough to lay it all out for us:

“As of January, the following titles standard length ongoing titles, previously priced at $3.99 for 32 pages/22 story pages, will be priced at $2.99 with 32 pages/20 story pages:
American Vampire
Batman: The Dark Knight
Batman Incorporated
Green Lantern: Emerald Warriors
JSA All-Stars

As of January, the following licensed titles, previously priced at $3.99, will be priced at $2.99:
Gears of War
God of War
Kane & Lynch
Ratchet & Clank.

As of January, the following ongoing titles previously priced at $3.99 for 40 pages/30 story pages including co-features, will no longer include co-features and will be priced at $2.99 for 32 pages/ 20 story pages:
Action Comics
Adventure Comics
Batman: Streets of Gotham
Detective Comics
Doc Savage
Justice League of America
Legion of Super-Heroes
The Spirit.

Marvel was a little more vague, but Senior VP of Sales & Circulation David Gabriel announced that all newly launched Marvel titles will be sold at $2.99.

Does this mean people will buy more comics? Hopefully. You’ll note that the actually story pages of the books have been cut to reflect this price change. People seem a little upset about that aspect of things, but what I see is better edited, faster and tighter stories that won’t get bogged down in continuity.

It’s a great time to be reading comics though, and hopefully this will make the newcomers a little less timid about trying out that issue of Superman they read about in the paper!

Opinions Expressed….

On The Watchtower this week, we wrap up all the news you need to know that came out of New York Comicon, including: New Captain America, the future of Aquaman, and A Zombie infestation is coming to IDW and only The Ghostbusters… and Transformers… and GI Joe… and Captain Kirk… Can stop it!

Comics Beat had a really good roundup of thoughts and ideas about what this price cut is really going to mean for the industry.

Since Spider-Man has a new movie villain, let the rumor mill swirl about the next Batman flick as well! Comics Alliance has a great piece on why they think it might be… Killer Croc?
