Facebookers Assemble!

11th March

With only a month to go until Marvel’s Avengers vs. X-Men we’re readying our battle cries. Mine mostly consists of singing the 90s X-Men theme song at the top of my lungs. I’m fairly confident it will put fear right into the hearts of those Avengers supporting ne’r do wells. If not, then you can find me cowering in the corner in my Wolverine themed jammies (I wish!). Ahem…anyhow, in wake of the calm before the storm Marvel has released Avengers Alliance, a free-to-play turn-based role-playing-game…on Facebook.

I’m hooked. I even managed to snag our own Marc Hamel into the game (success!). All other Facebook games have failed to grab my attention, but this…I don’t know if it’s the inclusion of so many Marvel characters that causes my nerd brain to go into overload, or that it’s actually a solid … Read More »

Classics: Marvels

Good day, comic-fans!

Here at The 4th Wall, we like to review anything new and exciting that catches our eyes. But our interest doesn’t stop there, no sir! We can recommend any of the classics to you in a heartbeat. Following in that sentiment, I’d like to review something of a classic for you good people. A simple opinion on one of the great works in the industry we know and love.

Recently, I found myself having the opportunity to read Marvels. It’s a book consisting of five parts that follows the career of a photographer in New York City. The reader follows him from the start of his career until the very end. This doesn’t sound like much at first but would it liven it up for you if I mentioned he takes pictures of superheroes? That he was friends with … Read More »

Much Ado About Pleasant Surprises

I love being surprised by media that comes out of nowhere. Whether you discover something that’s been around for a long time, or that’s just come out -but you didn’t know about it- there’s always that same reaction: “How did I not know about this!?”

That’s exactly how I felt yesterday when I saw the movie Chronicle. To start off, I had never even heard about this film until several days ago. When I read up on it I realized that it was a superhero film in the “found footage” style. You know, like Cloverfield or Blair Witch.  The whole shaky-cam, handheld deal. The story focuses on three high school boys who obtain super powers, chronicling the events that follow.

To summarize how I felt, I was extremely pleasantly surprised. Not only did they end up approaching this material in an … Read More »

The Year of The Superhero

Hey there comic fans!

You know what’s more awesome than comics? Nothing. But what comes to a close second? Movies, and even better superhero movies! That’s what we’re going to talk about today, the comic book movies you should know about and be excited for hitting us in the good ol’ 2012! The list may seem short, but these are what I consider to be the top 3 most anticipated superhero/comic book movies. But fret not, because at the end I’ll list the rest. Never say I don’t take care of the readers!

The Avengers – May 4th

This could easily be the most anticipated comic book movie ever. Never has there been such a concerted effort to get one movie done and planned to a tee. This is the culmination of 5 movies worth of preparation and teasing. It’s been carefully configured … Read More »

Arkham City Lockdown and Other Superpowered Mobile Games

Hi again, everyone! First off, I feel I should let everybody know that Batman: Arkham City Lockdown (iOS, Universal) is currently on sale for 2.99.

If you have any love for Batman whatsoever I implore you to grab this while it’s marked down from its original 5.99 price point. It plays a lot like the famed Infinity Blade (another iOS great) and serves as a prequel to Batman: Arkham City. Did I mention that it’s by the same developers who made the most recent Mortal Kombat?

The inmates of Arkham have escaped -again- and it’s up to Batman to put them in their place. How? By going around and beating the snot out of them, one by one, of course. With every battle you’ll gain XP to upgrade your gadgets and combat abilities. You can even play dress-up with Batman … Read More »

“Come on, I don’t belong up here, fighting monsters and supervillians. I just help the little guy”

Hey comic fans!

Its about that time of year that studios start shopping around for the next big thing for the fall. You’re probably asking yourselves “But Marc, you handsome devil, what does this have to do with comics?” and to that I respond “Thank you for the compliment, but damn you are impatient!” Well folks, it seems like superheroes are making the rounds for television once again, and this time we’ve lucked out.

The CW has signed the order on a pilot for a new series called Arrow. This new series will be starring Green Arrow, but perhaps not the Arrow you’re familiar with. Over at Spinoff Online, there have been some stirrings. Details regarding this new pilot reveal that the general elements of the show will be similar to the source material but not entirely the same. I’ve … Read More »

While Marvel teases, DC reveals it all!

Isn’t it like the world of comics to take something that most people would disregard or just put aside, and shove at the forefront and argue all about it! If you aren’t sure what I’m referring to, I’m talking of course about the DC Comics logo debacle. Yes, after only a handful of years, the DC “swoosh” logo (winner for most unimaginative logo name) is being retired and replaced with what I can only think to call the “flip book cartoon” logo. The logo literally resembles someone flipping a page. Anyways before we dive in, a little context!

As this was covered in The Watchtower Podcast (by the almighty leader of our band of comic rebels Jeff Moss and Donnie “Questy” Coulter) this week, you should check it out there! But lemme just summarize it. DC screwed up with … Read More »

Off the beaten path

Howdy,

So lets talk about something any 80′s child must  pick up this week.

The book I want to talk about, is a couple of weeks old. I’ve been tweeting and posting about it on-line for some time now. It’s a Jim Henson Classic brought from the silver screen to book format.  I’m talking about Volume 1 of The Dark Crystal: Creation Myths published by Archaia.

Before you guys say “Hey! I’ve seen the movie already!” I need to tell you, this is a brand new story line that ties into the movie mythology. Artist  Brian Froud participated in the creation of this amazing book bringing back the super nostalgia. For those who don’t know him, he was the artist who inspired both 80′s Classics Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal.

So what’s the story about?  Well, it’s a prequel … Read More »
