Though they treated him fairly as he grrew to adulthood, Thanos became distant and fascinated with death. Eventually Thanos fell in love with the embodiment of death, aptly named Mistress Death. Using a combination of technology and magic, Thanos strives to end all life in the Universe. He is a cold, compassionless dictator who cares about nothing except death.

Thanos‘ main weapon in his quest to erase life from the universe is an item known as The Infinity Gauntlet. Careful movie observers will have noticed this as one of the items in Odin’s treasure room in Thor, along with The Cosmic Cube.

In short: Thanos is a bad dude. If the Marve Movie Universe is heading in a Galactic direction, a head-on collision with Thanos was inevitable.

Summer 2012, it’s going to be a busy one for most, if not all, of us. Whether its movies, books or TV you love the most, there’s more than enough new stuff to go around!

The movie world kicked it all off with The Avengers (which if you haven’t seen, drop everything that you’re doing and go now. Now.) which was phenomenal, making 200.3 million at box office alone. Let me just tell you, this could quite possibly be the best film I have ever seen. Which Just the right amount of everything, humor, action, tears, the whole lot. Worth seeing once, or twice, or maybe thirty times.

Now, I know you’re thinking the same as I am, how will The Dark Knight live up? Or will it just be overshadowed? Other films that I feel like we definitely all need to look out for are Men in Black 3 (face it, you can try to act cool, but even the thought of this film is making you giggle a little) and Spider-Man (Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield? How could you not be excited for this one too?).

Now books you ask? Well, for those of you who haven’t jumped on the single issue bandwagon, the first of the DC52 trades have started coming out for your indulgence. What better to do on a lovely summer day than read a good story? Maybe start a new series? Along side the DC52 trades, the second wave of singles have come out, with new titles such as Earth 2, G. I. Combat and Dial H (which I highly, highly recommend), and many more to come over the course of the summer, like Before Watchmen.

As for on the tubes, the big one thats catching me this summer is season 5 of True Blood. After season 4′s cliffhanger, I can barely contain my excitement. Although, as good at this summer is going to be, we still have a lot to look forward to in the fall, like Dexter and Doctor Who.

Summer 2012 is going to be a good one, but the rest of the year is turning out pretty spiffy too!

I sort of feel that way right now because, with a disappointed heart I have to announce that the Nerdy Little Secret comedy show that we had planned for May 13th at the Comedy Nest has been cancelled. The circumstances were unfortunately well beyond our control and in the end, we’ve got to put it to rest.

One thing that I have always been very proud of about The 4th Wall is we take the shots. If there is a chance to reach out and connect with the community around us in a way that’s exciting and fun, we want to try it. So with that said, be sure that there will be plenty of events coming in the next few weeks that will do just that.

Often, businesses wait for the community to come to them. They open up shop and hope that people walk through their doors. At The 4th Wall, we have always wanted to do more than that. We want to reach out and be part of the community, not just a destination within it.

So with that said, I want to take this opportunity to announce The 4th Wall Initiative.

Spiraling out of our very successful back issue drive on Free Comic Book Day, The 4th Wall Initiative will be doing all kinds of community outreach and service over the coming months. The first of which is announcing that the aforementioned back issue drive will be changing from a mini-series to an ongoing.

That’s right, you can now donate comics for the soldiers at The 4th Wall any day that we’re open. In appreciation of this donation, we’ll be giving you some free books as well. All the details will be available on this website in the next couple of days.

So, to conclude, let me just say thanks to everyone who made our Free Comic Book Day and every day we’re open such an amazing time.

Be good, and we’ll see you ’round the shop!

-Moss

Comic-fans, it’s been nearly one year since DC’s widely controversial re-launching of its entire line of comics. There have been great successes (Batman, Aquaman, Justice League, Animal Man, etc.) and there have been some not so great books (the six cancelled titles for example). But DC did not plan to just cancel a bunch of series and just not do anything about it. No sir/madam, they planned a “second wave” of comics! This week, I picked up three of this new wave. the three that most interested me, and here’s a little review of these handful of titles.

Earth 2 #1: This is a book that is probably going to surprise a lot of people. It’s very different from what we see in the regular DC “continuity” at this particular time. Much like the Justice League series, this jumps right into the action. There’s no wasting of words and just gives you everything up front. The characters are different yet somewhat familiar, the setting and circumstances of the story parallel the current Justice League as well which gives an interesting twist to the series and hopefully gives the reader an idea of what’s to come. Overall, a book that was way better than I expected it to be, and hopefully a sign of an awesome series.

World’s Finest #1: This is a book that we’ve heard a lot about primarily because of Powergirl’s new costume more than anything else. It ties in to the events of Earth 2 but I can say with confidence that it is not as good as the book it lends from. It’s an okay read at best but nothing ground breaking and doesn’t do much to expand on this new universe that DC is creating. It’s not even necessarily a bad book, it just has a bit of missed potential. Although, to their credit, they might be saving all of the really juicy and good story telling for later in the series, rather than throwing down their hand all at once. Overall, a decent book but definitely not the “world’s finest” comic book (you cringed a bit didn’t you? That’s what I live for I assure you).

Dial H: This was an interesting read for me. I’m totally unfamiliar with the original Dial H for Hero series but I got the basic premise. The premise is that ordinary people enter a phone booth, dial a number and then become a random superhero with random powers. It’s one of those Golden Age concepts that was goofy and fun to play around with but in this case, what we have is a very interesting book for this day and age. The fact that it still retains some of the goofiness of the original concept is a point in its favor I would say. Two superheroes are featured in this issue and frankly, they are weird and goofy but it totally works for the book. I’m excited to see where they go with this exactly, the concept shows a lot of promise. Overall, a goofy and weird concept that uses this to its advantage, excellent read.

And that’s it folks! Those are my opinions on some of DC’s second wave! There’s still a couple to come in the coming weeks, and G.I Combat was also among this week’s second wave releases (While dinosaurs all over the cover is exciting to me, I just couldn’t be bothered to read it) and there is certainly something for everyone in this second wave! Don’t forget that Saturday is Free Comic Book Day (Also this link might interest you!) and the highly anticipated Avengers comes out this Friday!

I wanted to take a moment to shed some light on something we are doing for Free Comic Book Day that has a little bit of meaning behind it.

For those who don’t know, my younger brother has been in the military for pretty much all of his adult life. He has served two tours of duty in Afghanistan and has spent the better part of the last 10 years living out of suitcases as he has been shipped around the country being trained in things that I can’t even begin to understand.

When he returned after his last tour in Afghanistan, I asked him what the biggest challenge for he and his fellow soldiers was while deployed. “Boredom” he quickly responded. “There isn’t a whole lot to do with your spare time and while the care packages people send are really nice, we always end up with piles of copies of ‘Maxim’ and that’s about it.”

So, I asked if comics might have broken up that time a little more. “Absolutely” he said. “Even if someone wasn’t a big time comics reader or collector, it’d be something different. And everyone loves Batman, right?”

I started thinking about many of the customers I’ve met over the years who have a box of comics, something that’s just collecting dust in an attic or crawlspace. Stuff that isn’t worth much and more than anything, people are just looking to get rid of. Stuff like what’s piled up in my own guest room. Comics that I bought, read, enjoyed, but don’t have any real value to me financially or sentimentally.

So why not send those over to the troops? I thought. It’d get them out of my house, no one’s ever going to buy them from me and if I sent them overseas, at least maybe they’d be enjoyed by someone again. Or at the very least, used to make someones long time seem a little bit shorter.

Comics have been distributed to the troops as far back as WWII, often to stave off boredom or even just to raise spirits. I can’t think of a better tradition to be part of than one that helps pass the days for people who have taken a brave, selfless path and had to endure things that I know I could not.

So this coming Saturday May 5th (which is of course Free Comic Book Day!) when you stop by for your free comics, why not bring over some of that stuff you never read, or don’t have any use for? We will sort it out, ship it to our deployed men & women and for every Diamond box your donation fills, we’ll offer you a $5 store credit for Free Comic Book Day.

You know you’re going to be walking out with a pile of free stuff, so why not make it a Free Comic Book Day for someone else as well?

I don’t know about the rest of you, but I always related university exam period to tip-toeing through a minefield. As soon as that last 30 minutes of any exam was announced, it became a full-on sprint with disregard for life or limb. Personal stories aside, I’d like to bring the Ender’s Game comics to your attention. The comics are based on the sci-fi novels by Orson Scott Card which focus on Ender Wiggin, a brilliant 6 year-old boy entered into Battle School. At the school he must train with many other extraordinary children to become Earth’s next defense for when the Formics attack.

Some people like to relate their school to being at Hogwarts. For me, I obviously relate it to training for battle, just like in Ender’s Game. It’s a fantastic tale that showcases the struggles of a boy singled out from his peers to be the savior of mankind. The Ender’s Game Ultimate Collection was released earlier this year, collecting both the Battle School and Command School series. This is some sci-fi perfection.

If you’ve read the Ender’s Game novel, then you already know what happens in this collection. I’d read it back in high school, but reading the comic adaptation recently brought back so many memories that I had to share them. The teachers keep throwing more and more at Ender, and he keeps coming right back at them. With what the students are put through it’s entirely easy to forget that they’re all children.

After reading the Ultimate Collection you may even want to pick up the other graphic novel adaptations from the series, such as Ender’s Shadow: Battle and Command School, Ender in Exile, War of Gifts, Speaker for the Dead, and Formic Wars: Burning Earth. I found it nearly impossible to stop reading the series after only Ender’s Game: Battle and Command School. The core story from Card’s novels is so enticing that you need to find out what happens after the end of Command School, with Formic Wars actually being a prequel to the entire series.

Make sure to drop by for your dose of Ender! With an entire shelf dedicated to the series, you won’t miss it!

Kelly Tindall wrote and drew the adventures of Archie Snow, the leopard-headed adventurer, in nearly thirty issues of the acclaimed Image comic Proof before going on to supply artwork for This is a Souvenir (Image), Machine of Death (Bearstache), I Saw You (Three Rivers), Zombie Bomb (Terminal Press), and Matinee Eclectica (Dirty Third). Besides providing colors and letters for other books (such as Green Wake), Kelly is currently working on Rebel Blood for Image and spends time with his wife and super-awesome baby daughter.

Karine Charlebois
Karine Charlebois has been drawing since she could hold a crayon. When she learned that cartoons weren’t exactly made by elves in Japan and California, she found her way into the Montreal animation industry. She’s worked mostly in storyboarding for both TV and video games, and at some point decided to try her hand at comics, first landing a few gigs with an educational publishing house and producing a graphic novel for them. A well known artist in the Gargoyles fandom, she got the opportunity to draw both for the main series and the Gargoyles: Bad Guys spinoff, published by SLG. She currently juggles working from home on a comic series for Mega Brands, raising two young boys with her husband, and trying to make her obese, geriatric cat lose some weight.

Ariel Marsh
Ariel Marsh is a freelance artist living on the West Island. She works on illustrations, pin-ups, watercolour greeting cards and art for small Flash games. Her current comic work includes Infantasy and three stories in Sci-Fact Comics, both published by Ink’d Well Comics. In her free time she digs playing video games, Dungeons and Dragons and reading comics.

I know I’m a little late in posting my words on this subject, but here we have it; a new lady in the TARDIS? Jenna-Louise Coleman was announced as the Doctor’s new companion, replacing Karen Gillan, with a first appearance in the 2012 Christmas special, and I’m not too sure how I feel about this. I know feelings on the subject throughout the fandoms are very mixed – some think she’ll be fantastic, and others not so much.

It’s not that I’m against change, change can be great. I loved the switch from David Tenant to Matt Smith, but I’ve grown so attached to Amy and Rory that it’s going to be really hard to see them go. Heartbreaking even. And I can’t help but wonder what will become of River Song afterwards? Will her character remain, or will it be gone alongside her parents? We’ve been through so much with the three of them that it just feels wrong to see them leave.

And rumors of this new companion being non-human? I don’t know why this concerns me so much, but it does. The companions humanness keeps the Doctor in balance, they complement each other – especially with Matt Smith as the Doctor. I’m concerned that taking that humanness away will just throw the whole show out of whack.

Also, when interviewed about her new role on the show, Jenna-Louise was really unspecific when answering any questions – leaving me to believe that she has no real knowledge or appreciation for the show. This concerns me more than anything else because I feel like it should be a requirement that every companion be as big of a fangirl as the audience themselves. In my mind, that’s just how that should work. But hey, Karen didn’t have an ultimate knowledge about the show and she turned out to be the best companion ever. In my opinion at least.

I guess all that I can really do at this point is wait and see what happens. Maybe she’ll win my heart just like Amy did, and Donna and Martha before her, or maybe I’ll be extremely disappointed. All I can be sure of is that Stephen Moffat seems to feel a need to personally victimize his fans, leaving us hanging by a thread, following his twitter feed like a religious text and we’re going to have to wait until later this year to see the results of this new change.

Well, here’s the skinny. The 4th Wall East has been folded back into the The 4th Wall proper. We are one store again, bigger, stronger and better than we were before.

The reason for this is simple: It made more sense. We set out to see how two locations of The 4th Wall would operate with each other and in the end we found that we are able to better serve our clients with one, focused, unified operation. Splitting our resources didn’t help us to get comics into our clients hand’s faster or better. So, with that in mind, we brought everything home.

There is no ill will between us and the great folks at Gamer’s Vault. We loved our time together, but we are also looking forward to getting back to what it is we do: Comics.

With the re-unification of our stores comes a few other changes that I’m really excited to tell you about in the coming days. The first of which is a a brand-new website and some renovations that you can check out first-hand at the store any time. This is going to lead to some very cool new stuff that hasn’t been done in comic stores before, and I think you are really going to enjoy it.

Also, starting April 2nd, The 4th Wall will be open seven days a week! That’s right, we’ll be open Monday 12p-7p so you’ll be able to get your four-colour fix any day of the week.

Thank you for your support and patience over the last few months. It’s because of that that we know we are making the right call and are so excited to be here for a long, long time to come!

Peace, love & Road Hockey,

Lately I’ve had this weird craving for a solid, villain based comic. You know, something where the villain was the hero and the hero seemed kind of like a huge jerk. Kinda like Megamind in a way, ya know? Well Millar delivers, I’ll tell you that much! This book is a great introduction into what could be an amazing story. Let me run down the basics for you. So there’s this guy named Johnny Bolt, and he is a real loser. He’s got electric powers and a criminal rap sheet. But the problem is, he’s getting sent off to jail more times than he’s actually making a score. The country is too heavily populated with superheroes. So he gets this bright idea to leave the country, move to Spain, and pull off the biggest heist of his career. if this doesn’t have you salivating, you aren’t a writer! (Granted, I don’t think normal people would salivate over excellent story elements so you should feel secure in the fact that your sanity is intact. In the meantime, I will continue to harbour a crazy writer’s spirit.)

The first issue details the beginning of this major plot and overall it is an interesting start. It defines the characters well, gives this cool almost Ocean’s Eleven feel, and then gives you the set up. Johnny is an interesting character in that you know he’s a super villain but you sympathize with the guy. This sympathy is made all the stronger by the fact that the two heroes portrayed are major a**holes. The Gladiator gives off this show-off, know-it-all vibe as he punches and kicks villains to jail. And another hero is shown to be acquitted of being a “dirty” hero, just because he’s saved lives. There isn’t better characterization than this, I tell you. Now as a writer myself, I could speak for hours about the way Millar did a fantastic job on this book. However, Leinil Yu has a lot of deserved praise for the book as well. He does gorgeous, serious work on this book and gives characters a solid feel to them. Johnny’s lightening bolt tie is a sweet touch I must say.

Obviously, my review of the book is that you should go buy it twice. That’s how much I like this. That being said, it is rife with the standard Millar language (e.g the kinds of things kids shouldn’t say until they hit their rebellious phase) and what I’m sure will evolve into some pretty gruesome violence. Honestly, I’d recommend it for teenagers and up but it’s still something you should be on the lookout for. Did I mention this book will eventually become a movie? Well I mentioned Mark Millar wrote it so that’s kind of saying the same thing, isn’t it?

Anyways comics-fans, you can find a copy of Supercrooks #1 here, at The 4th Wall and if my glowing recommendation wasn’t enough, ask the rest of our lovely crew what they think of it! We’re always pleased to answer your questions and help you find whatever you need! Until next time, comics-fans!
